The Copy Team attends school events, sports games, and concerts throughout the year. While integrating the theme of the yearbook “Chromatica,” copy members write about their experience and the details of the event to document it officially in writing—for students, parents, and future Bears to read. Copies also include quotes from student participants and organizers, sharing insight of student life and campus culture.

2019-2020 Yearbook
Loud, restless, easily excitable: these are all words one might normally use to describe a dance enthusiast. On Friday Nov. 22, however, a hush fell over Hertz Hall as the crowd waited in eager anticipation for the start of the Fall 2019 Movement Showcase. The event marked the return of a beloved tradition in the UC Berkeley dance community. Though the dancers on stage seemed small in comparison to the spacious hall, their presence filled the room and effortlessly enraptured each spectator.
Featuring six Movement teams and over 1000 dancers from other dance teams, the showcase included a total of 21 performances. However, the show was far from repetitive, as each team explored drastically different styles, concepts, and songs. “Just the variety of performances that happened tonight was very impressive,” stated freshman Kathleen Nie. “I was also shocked by the number of people that could be on stage and be so clean at the same time.
Indeed, the many teams that performed proudly represented the cream of UC Berkeley’s dance crop. Many dancers even took part in multiple acts, including senior Irene Liu. “It was a little bit more frantic but I really enjoyed the energy,” Liu said. “There are a lot of people who are on four to five different teams, whom I really respect.”
Throughout the show, another aspect of Movement’s character revealed itself beyond the stage. As the audience roared with deafening cheers and overwhelming support, the strong community behind Movement quickly became clear. In fact, as the show progressed, the audience contained not only supportive friends but fellow dancers as well, still panting and filled with adrenaline but ready to cheer on their teammates. It is perhaps this sense of camaraderie which helps to attract so many new dancers every year. “[I joined Movement because] I really liked how close everyone seemed, and was encouraged to audition with my friends,” Liu said.
Even as night fell, the cheers and applause erupting from Hertz Hall filled the air and lit up the darkening sky. Both the impressive performances and the atmosphere of camaraderie made the Fall 2019 Movement Showcase a night to remember.
Kelis Porter
Hi! My name is Kelis Porter and I'm a third year majoring in English. I have been apart of Blue & Gold's copy team for a year now and I'm so thrilled to be one of the Copy Editors this year! Joining Blue & Gold has shaped so many of my experiences at Cal and continues to be an incredibly warm and welcoming environment for me to explore copy writing. Through B&G, I've made great friends, grew so much as a writer and overall made so many special memories. I'm so glad that I get to work creatively with people who share the same passion and excitement for Yearbook!
Alan Zuo
My name is Alan Zuo, and I am a second-year majoring in Microbial Biology. In high school, I was very involved in my yearbook class through being both an active staff member and a writing editor, so I knew I’d be a great fit at Blue & Gold Yearbook. B&G possesses such a welcoming, inclusive, and fun community that created a lot of cherished memories for me. The social and low-stress setting allowed me to both connect with my community as well as develop my interest in journalistic writing
